LAII Hosts Lecture With Cuban Scholar Armando Nova

The LAII is pleased to host a presentation with Dr. Armando Nova on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 12:00 noon, at the LAII. This presentation, titled "The Impact of the Economic and Social Policy Guidelines on the National Production of Food in Cuba," looks at the interesting and significant process of economic transformation that has begun in Cuba, which is being called the "updating of the economic model." The transformation includes all sectors, with important implications for the economic, social, and political aspects of the country. These transformations are outlined in the Guidelines of the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution, approved by the VI Congress of the PCC, in April 2011 and ratified during the recent Conference of the PCC, celebrated in February of this year.

The Cuban Farming Sector is identified as a strategic economic sector because of its production of food, raw materials, renewable energy, import substitution, and as a generator of export funds. It is precisely in this sector that many of these transformations, which are considered profound, have taken place since 2007. The basic goal of this talk is to assess these transformations, their results, and their impact on the Cuban economy.Armando Nova is a senior researcher and professor at the Center for the Study of the Cuban Economy at the University of Havana. He earned his doctorate degree in economics at the University of Havana in 1989 and his BA in economics at the University of Havana in 1969. He has conducted more than 84 research studies on the Cuban economy and the agroindustrial economy in Cuba, and has published more than 65 articles in different Cuban and international journals. He is the author of La agricultura en Cuba: evolución y trayectoria, 1959-2005 (Editorial de Ciencias Sociales, 2006), Aspectos económicos de los cítricos en Cuba (Editorial Científico-Técnica, 1988) and a third book as well as co-author of two other volumes.
