Pedacitos de Resistencia: Socially Engaged Work in Latin American Special Collections

Pedacitos de Resistencia maps socially engaged work in the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections. Drawing from the Latin American and U.S Latinx special collections, this exhibit spans various time periods, geographies, genres, and mediums to highlight the many ways communities and artists have documented, represented, and responded to social issues that range from migration to education, violence, politics and traditions.

Items in this exhibit play with form and function. They use mediums, genres, and materials in non-traditional ways to make a social statement - a book made of recycled cardboard to combat literacy, or migrant narratives captured on paper made from the cotton of their clothes, or the burlap patchwork of the arpilleras to denounce oppression.

Pedacitos de Resistencia offers archival snapshots, pedacitos (pieces) of collections to briefly showcase how socially engaged work can capture different histories, narratives, and imaginaries. This exhibit is up from January-December 2024.
